04.) FRANK W, imo 9376674, built 2006, Antigua flag, Bureau Veritas class (incl. All flag certificates & ISM DOC), 3.650dwat GERMAN drycargo coaster.

Third casualty in less than half a year

In the night of Nov 12, 2011, the "Frank W" ran aground in the Mariager Fjord and needed tug assistance. It was the third time in less than half a year that the ship was involved in an incident. On 26 June the Frank W was in collision with a Danish cutter off Skagen which sank immediately. On 28 July the Frank W ran aground between Saltholm and Malmö. Salvage crews were then forced to lighter the vessel tow miles off the Swedish coast. On Nov 11 the "Frank W" was coming from Mariager and bound to Sweden with a cargo of 3600 tons salt when it got stuck. The freighter was hard aground so that the first attempt to pull it off the ground on Nov 12 failed. During the night hours a powerful tug arrived on site and managed to pull the "Frank W" off. The vessel was then anchored off Mariager Fjord, where it has been joined by anti pollution vessel "Mette Miljø". There was, however, no evidence of leakage from the ship. On Nov 13 representatives of the classification society went aboard for surveys and the detention will only be lifted in case no damage was found. Before the grounding the ship had slowed down to drop off the pilot. The freighter was then taken by a current and ran aground.

10.) ALMA, imo 9140968, Cyprus flag, RMRS class (including flag certificates), ISM DOC by Bureau Veritas, 4.000dwat Russian refrigerated gen.cgo ship.

Rudder loss off Iceland

The Icelandic Coastguard was alarmed on Nov 5, 2011, after the "Alma" enroute St. Petersburg-Kollafjordur had lost its rudder off southeast coast and narrowly avoided washing up on the shore. The ship has a crew of 14 Ukrainians and two Russians and was carrying 3,000 tonnes of frozen seafood. The "Alma" lost her rudder when sailing into Hornafjordur in the early morning hours. The tug "Hoffell" from Faskrudsfjordur happened to be nearby and was called to by the Coastguard command centre in Reykjavik. The "Hoffell" managed to get a towline attached onto the vessel, and pulled it out to sea where course was set in the direction of the port Reydarfjordur in the East Fjords. After two hours, however, the towline snapped and the freighter floated free once again. The Coastguard cruiser "Thor" finally pulled the ship to Faskrudsfjordur where an inspection by divers revealed that the rudder had completely gone.

Rescue cost cover demanded

The fish processing company Lodnuvinnslan in Faskrudsfjordur and the municipality Hornafjordur in east Iceland demand collateral of up to 3.9 million Euro from the operator of the "Alma" to cover the cost of its rescue. At the order of the District Commissioner in Eskifjordur, the ship is barred from leaving the harbor in Faskrudsfjurdur to where it was towed. Its sister ship, the "Green Lofoten", arrived in Faskrudsfjordur on Nov 9 in the evening to take over the cargo, 3,000 tons of frozen seafood products, but the cargo has been grounded along with the ship. The fee requested amounts to a quarter of the combined value of the ship and its cargo and should be paid to those who participated in the ship’s rescue. The commercial agent of "Alma"’s operator assumes that collateral will be submitted in the coming days and that the grounding will then be lifted. However, the final amount has yet to be determined.

SHE WAS NOT INSPECTED BY PORT STATE CONTROL AFTER THE ACCIDENT.

Joerg N supposed to have run on autopilot The "Joern N" which by Nov 5 was still being held in Rijeka, was apparently navigated by autopilot when sinking the "Golub" in the Adriatic Sea. Apparently no one was at the helm of the ship when the collision occurred only a few miles from the coast. The captain learned from the sinking only via radio, the officer on duty of the "Joerg N." said that he did not remark the collision The man stated, however, that he had seen the fishing boat still afloat. The Hamburg-based shipping company of the "Joerg N" anticipated that the vessel may leave Rijeka early next week. The local authorities claim, however, that the shipping company filed a bailout.

Joerg N suspected to have fled accident site The "Joerg N" is accused to have fled from the scene after the sinking of the Croatian f/v without caring for the shipwrecked crew. The vessel on its way from Ceuta to Rijeka had run into the "Golub" short before reaching its destination on Nov 1 five miles off Pula. After the crew of eight was able to reach the coast in its rescue boat, they raised alarm at the Croatian Coastguard. Investigators boarded the "Joerg N" in Rijeka to question the crew and survey damage to the ship

15.) DONA LIBERTA, imo 9008639, 1991 Built, Bahamas (UK mirror) flag, NKK class (incl. all her flag certificates & ISM DOC), 5134dwt Greek refrigerated gen.cgoship.

Crewmembers taken off laid up ship

The two crew members of the "Dona Liberta" forced to live in cramped, unsanitary conditions with no mains power and wash in rain water have been taken off of the ship which is laid up on the river Fal. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) on Oct 31, 2011, issued a prohibition order on the ship, ordering the crew off the vessel. The two men had not been paid for three months and money for supplies had dried up, forcing them to fish for food. They were living in a few small spaces on the ship and had no mains power, relying on vessels which sometimes pulled up alongside for electricity. The ship was laid up in King Harry Reach in June 2011, and the workers on board had been regularly visited by the Mission to Seafarers charity and Truro Harbour Office staff. The two watchmen wanted to stay on the ship and did not want their story highlighted, fearful their wages would not be paid. But the Truro harbour master said the situation became unacceptable as winter drew closer. The workers are now staying in a Falmouth hotel while the International Transport Federation fought for their wages to be paid, though the men possibly will only be receiving their wages when the ship is sold.
